Racing Thoughts, Golden Calm — Finding Stillness in the Heart of Epsom Downs

A moment between motion and calm

At Epsom Downs, when the last few horses leave the track and the light turns liquid gold, something shifts. The day exhales. Riders guide their horses back to the stables, watched by a handful of onlookers soaking up that fading warmth. This is the scene behind my new watercolour, Racing Thoughts, Golden Calm — painted in the quiet that follows the rush.

For me, that space mirrors the ADHD experience: the noise of racing thoughts, then those rare pockets of golden calm when everything briefly settles. Each wash of colour becomes a breath — motion dissolving into stillness.

The story behind the painting

I painted Racing Thoughts, Golden Calm after an evening at Epsom Racecourse, watching the light fold over the downs. The silhouettes of the horses moved like thoughts — scattered, restless — before softening into shadow. That contrast between energy and serenity felt personal.

ADHD often feels like that: a sprinting mind searching for rest. Watercolour, with its fluid unpredictability, became the perfect language to express it. The pigment spread on wet paper the way thoughts scatter — and settle — in the brain.

From Epsom Downs to inner calm

While it's rooted in Surrey's local landscape, this painting speaks to anyone who's ever struggled to slow down. The golds and violets echo the quiet satisfaction of the day's end — the reward after intensity. Visitors often describe the work as "peaceful but alive," a balance I try to hold in both my art and my ADHD journey.

If you're in Epsom or South London, you can see the original at The Canvas Club Exhibition — The Horton Arts Centre, Haven Way, Epsom (KT19 8NP), 5 – 15 November 2025. Entry is free, and all ten exhibiting artists welcome you to explore local art in Surrey.

Why local art matters

Local exhibitions like The Canvas Club help connect Epsom artists with their community. When people search "art exhibition Epsom" or "South London art events," they often discover artists they've never met before. That's the power of local SEO — making art discoverable to those nearby who are already searching for something meaningful.

By including phrases like Epsom Downs painting, Surrey art exhibition, and ADHD art series, I aim not only to reach art lovers but to make this work findable by people who need a visual reminder to slow down.

Painting calm for a racing world

My hope is that Racing Thoughts, Golden Calm feels like a pause button — a window into peace. Whether you live with ADHD, love horses, or simply appreciate the glow of Epsom Downs at golden hour, this piece offers a breath between thoughts.
